Is this a theme, or topic?

I have to write an essay on what the theme is and explaining why for "Thank You, M'am." I was wondering, can a theme be "kindness and generosity?" because I thought it had to be a sentence, basically, or else it would be a topic. for ex. Topic: evil Theme: Good always triumphs over evil
